Why should we care about the funding and staffing of regulators?

by Vincent van Langen and Martha Baxter

Abstract (EN) | The governance of economic regulators matters. How a regulator is established, directed, controlled, held to account, and resourced will directly impact the effectiveness of regulatory frameworks. To enable a regulator to succeed in its efforts of combining impactful regulation with high standards of integrity and trust, its governance arrangements should all be carefully designed. A well-governed and well-resourced regulator is better positioned to provide confidence to stakeholders that decisions are fair and consistent. In its 2022 report Equipping Agile and Autonomous Regulators, the OECD deep-dives into the resourcing arrangements of regulators, exploring their funding and management of human and financial resources.
